Along
with the study of clay pipes and the pipe industry's role in our
culture and development, a number of individuals are reproducing
clay pipes using the original molding techniques and sometimes the
original molds. Some of these producers are involved with museums
or presentations as living histories, whereas others are entrepreneurs
working to produce a quality commercial product. As noted with the
on-line literature links, most (but not all) of these makers operate
in the UK.
Stephen
Bray
of Olde World Fine Clays operating in Canada, makes an excellent
product. Heather
Coleman produces her own well-executed Dawn Mist clay pipes
some of which reproductions, and others of which are her own unique
modern artistic creations. John
Griffiths has chosen to concentrate on producing a selection
of Victorian style figural pipes. David
Cooper is producing pipes at Amberley Museum. The Armstrong
family pipe molds are also being used to reproduce original pipes,
and at least one other English
pipemaker is using original molds to produce pipes.
An
American source of a limited range of reproduction Victorian clays
is the Pipeshoppe; it should
be mentioned that the original reed stem pipes that are being sold
there were probably made about 60 years ago (not 140 years).
There
are also a number of firms selling Pollock pipes, including Sheffield,
Knoxville,
and Tobacco
Direct.
